Theobald, the first Metzger there is any information about, was a ceramic chemist in Germany. He went to France to study ceramics, met and married a French girl named Margarita (or Margaretha). They came to Amarica, settling in Galena, Illinois where he ran a bakery shop and where they raised a family of six children: August, William Sidney, Louis, Theobald Jr. ("Theo Garry", pictured at right), Carrie, and Ernest Franklin.

There was no information about August. William Sidney was a lawyer who wrote horoscopes as a hobby. He married and had two children; Benjamin and Carrie (named after her aunt).

Carrie, a nurse, married a man whose last name was Hartzel, and they had a daughter Gertrude (also a nurse) who married Henry Grimm, editor of the Galena Gazette at that time. Their daughter, Alice Grimm, never married and possibly still lives in Galena. Henry Grimm owned a launch, and the Metzgers and Grimms had many pleasant trips down the Mississippi on Sundays.

Theo Gary never married but was a kind and popular uncle to the family. He was a highly regarded salesman. After his sister Carrie was widowed, she kept house for Theo Gary. She was to attend the doctor at the birth of Merrrium's child Vivian (your author), but Vivian was born ahead of schedule
