Kenoroba - Kareens Village
5/22/01 - 5/22/01
Kareen lives in Kenoroba which is located about 3 hours
drive outside Korhogo. She told me there were almost 5000 people living
in that village but I saw only a very small part of that. The village
must extend further out in all directions than I saw. It is quite and
there is bus transport too and from there daily. There are both mud
huts and cement houses. Some have electricity and other don't. There
is even a couple streets with street lights. It's a pretty nice place
and her accommodations there are luxurious by Peace Corps standards.
I had a great time in her village and feel a lot better knowing where
it is she's working. I know she will be able to help out the people
there a great deal. She is supposed to be doing Health Care and education
but the nurse and the midwife seem to have their own scams going so
we shall see how much headway she makes in that department. She is spending
her time now getting to know the villagers and working with the artist's
coops to get their work out to more people. They have wood carvers,
weavers, potters, blacksmiths, and musicians in the village but most
must farm to feed their family and only work on their art part time.
If you get to Cote d'Ivoire I would recommend going there.
