How Do I Connect?

Nothing could be easier! But: I would ask that you read a bit further and become familiar with the commands before leaping in! If you can find out who is logged on, how to start a game and how to move the pieces (especially from the bar and off the board), your introduction to backgammon on the internet will be so much more enjoyable.

Just connect to FIBS.

If you're new and really can't wait, login as guest and type help for a list of commands.

What Does It Look Like?

When you do connect, you'll get a screen very much like the following:

If you don't see the above and you are asked for a password, you have succeeded in accessing fraggel65, but you haven't connected to the correct port number. Find out how to specify port 4321 for your networking software.

It's My First Time, What Do I Do?

As a first time user, you would type guest, after which the display will look like:

Welcome to FIBS. You just logged in as guest.
Please register before using this server:

Type 'name username' where username is the name you want to use.
The username may not contain blanks ' ' or colons ':'.
The system will then ask you for your password twice.
Please make sure that you don't forget your password. All
passwords are encrypted before they are saved. If you forget
your password there is no way to find out what it was.
Please type 'bye' if you don't want to register now.

Choosing a Name

Basically, all you can do now is choose a name or leave. The name you pick cannot be changed and you must not lose the password you choose, because no-one can access the passwords - not even the maintainer of the server - Andreas Schneider!.

Here's a sample name-choosing session (you shouldn't have so much trouble choosing a name, I just wanted to illustrate how it works :-)

** Please use another name. 'mikeq' is already used by someone else.
> name __==+
** Your name may only contain letters and the underscore character _ .
> name Amblin
Please give your password: 
Please retype your password: 
You are registered.
Type 'help beginner' to get started.
Notice that the password you choose isn't displayed on the screen, make a note of it, because you won't be able to login as your new persona without it!

And that's it! Now you ready to go with the flow or...

I recommend you become familiar with the FIBS commands (This file is relatively large, about 72K bytes). Or go back to the main FIBS Help Page.

Next Time You Login

When you login again, you don't use guest, you use the name you chose when you first logged in, with the password you gave. You can change the password whenever you wish, but you need to keep a note of it (many of the graphical interfaces automate the login process too).
